The Memorial Stupa, popularly known as Thimphu National Chorten was built in 1974 by Queen Mother Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuk in memory of his son HM Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the third Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan. His Majesty is said to have expressed numerous times, an intention of building a Chorten in Thimphu where people can convene for various religious practices. Chortens are usually painted white to signify the essence of Buddhism and purity of Buddha mind. The Thimphu Chorten holds carved images of Lord Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, protective Bodhisattvas, and other wrathful deities. It has four entrances to signify doors of enlightenment.
